On Sunday, April 15, retired USMC Drill Instructor and actor R. Lee Ermey, passed away due to complications from pneumonia. Ermey, best known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanaley Kubrick’s film “Full Metal Jacket”, was beloved by millions for his ruthless portrayal of a USMC drill sergeant training recruits at Parris Island during the Vietnam War. Ermey himself served in the USMC for 11 years, including 14 months deployed to Vietnam, and he wrote a majority of his character’s lines for the film.
